I chose light and dark because of the variation of images that I could compile with the title and add emotion to as many black and white images have so many alternate meanings to them but I realized that light and dark didn't just have to be black and white it can include colour. And it is why I chose Ron Dadon as his work includes coloured lights in the dark.
With the comparison the top images are mine an the ones below are the artists.
Paul Strand
Paul Strand was an American photographer who established photography as an art form. His architectural and landscape pieces inspired me to take some similar to his as they were different to many I had seen and were ones that I knew I would enjoy taking. The contrast between the sunny day and the shadows make the photographs relevant to the title; light and dark. This is especially evident in the middle photo where the railings by the steps create a repeating pattern on the steps.

Ron Dadon is a Californian based photographer who ranges from doing black and white photography to very vibrant colours. what drew me to his work was the vignette page on his website which showed many emotion based images with thought provoking captions to them. I thought that it was a cool addition to many of his photographs and that I would want to try them with my own photographs. The picture on the left has a girl with very emotional eyes which could work really well with the captions. The middle image fits into the theme of light and dark as the image is in a dark setting but coloured lights are lighting the person and the setting up.

Ferdinando Scianna
Ferdinando Scianna is an Italian photographer who uses shadows and light to create a artistic look on the person. Each of the pictures I have chosen to look at, have a person and a patterned shadow all in black and white which not only makes the images fit into the theme of light and dark but also creates an sense of mystery in the images .What drew me to his pictures were the different patterns incorporated in them.

Final Design Idea
Using the images I have taken in preparation for my 10 hour exam, I created the following. Below are a few screen shots of the process. I de-saturated the photograph to make it black and white, then cropped it in to a square. This way the viewer is drawn to the light cast over the subjects face. I then increased the contrast of the image so that it exaggerates the shadows.
I then layered the image with a second photograph (close up of a holographic bag) creating an interesting light pattern over the black and white image. To refine the image, I increased the saturation of the second photograph so that the colour variation really stands out.
